The dream of reviving a 200 year lost tradition of a family farm distillery took 25 years to bring to fruition. Our vision was to have what is called a single estate Whiskey distillery, where the grain is produced on the farm and by-products of distilling are fed to the livestock on the farm.
In addition we wanted to do everything possible to minimise environmental impact and maximise sustainability across the operation. This meant we were breaking new ground in the standards of environmental protection which led to delays and additional costs, but we are very pleased that we stubbornly insisted on sustainability and environmental protection as key pillars of our business plan as we are now seeing the fruits of that effort. In our first year of production Ballykeefe Distillery was a bronze medal winner at the 2018 Irish Food and Drinks Business Awards, for its achievements in Sustainability in its first year of production and we took home the Environmental Award at this year’s Kilkenny Chamber Business Awards. Ballykeefe Distillery is also a flagship member of the Bord Bia “Origin Green” programme, advancing protection of the environment.
